Building Your Own Renewable Energy System

When you want to install a renewable energy system in your home, you will first need to take the time to plan your system out so that when you are ready to begin, you will simply need to follow the plans that you have made. Taking the time to plan your renewable energy system will not only save you a lot of time once the installation process has begun, it can also save you some money, too.

Ask the Right Questions

First, you will need to decide which types of renewable energy you want to use. The main options are wind powered systems and solar powered systems, or you can use a combination of both. Before you decide which option you want, ask yourself the following questions:

·       What am I going to use the renewable energy system for? If you are using your system to power your entire home, then you may want to look at solar energy as a more reliable source of energy, or at least consider using a combination system.

·        Will wind power produce enough energy for what I am planning to use it for?

·         What are the weather and wind conditions like in my region?

·         Are there times when I will need to rely on traditional energy for my needs?

All of these questions will get you started, but you will also want to include any relevant information about your family’s personal needs into the equation. A family will typically use more energy that one person, for example, and may need to have an additional source of power in addition to the renewable energy system.

Make Your Plan

Your plan should include your budget and a list of all of the items that you will need to have on hand when you begin building your renewable energy system. You can easily build several solar panels in one day, as long as you have all of the materials that you need on hand. You may become discouraged if you end up running to the hardware store several times, or realize that you have to order something online that will take weeks to arrive.

The most common items that you will need to build your own solar panels include:

·         Wire

·         Hammer, nails and screwdriver

·         Sheets of hard plastic to cover your solar panel

·         Lumber, cut to fit the size of your solar panel

·         Mono-crystalline solar cells (you can buy these inexpensively online)

·         Plugs for your solar cells

Along with these basics, you will also need the invertors, batteries and any connections that you will use to plug your solar panels into your main power supply. Although this list may seem complicated, or even expensive, you can easily find everything that you need online for a very low cost. It is easy to be confused by the many different options that are available, but as long as you find one reliable source on information and use it exclusively, you will find that making your renewable energy system will become easier.
